NHL 2010 Playoffs - Second Round Thoughts
Today I will offer some more NHL playoffs betting tips.
The first round of the NHL Playoffs is in the books, and
the dogs were definitely barking in the Eastern Conference with the top 4
seeds all being eliminated. While it wasn't a particularly low scoring
opening round, the table has been set with several goaltenders establishing
themselves as early Conne Smythe Trophy candidates (MVP of the Playoffs).
Ride the Hot Goalie
Perhaps the single most important factor in a teams playoffs success is the
goaltender. History has shown over and over that an average team with a
red-hot goalie can go all the way to the Finals. Dryden with Montreal in
1971, Hasek with Buffalo in 1999, Giguere with Anaheim in 2003 and Kiprusoff
with Calgary in 2004 just to name a few. This year has proven to be no
different, as the heavily out-gunned Montreal Canadiens eliminated the #1
overall seeded Washington Capitals in the first round, led by the
spectacular goaltending of Jaroslav Halak. The Boston Bruins also find
themselves in the second round after riding their red-goalie to a first
round victory over the favored Buffalo Sabres. These are two teams to keep
an eye on as the playoffs continue--sport books will be listing at underdog prices
more often than not, so you will have some solid money-making opportunities
if you pick your spots.
Things Will Tighten Up
I would continue looking for opportunities to play the under as the
second round progesses. Realizing that the first round wasn't overly
low-scoring, I'm hoping that sport books begin posting some higher numbers
for us to take advantage of. As these players get closer to their dream of
playing for the Stanley Cup, more and more of an emphasis is placed on team
defence, so look for the games to begin trending much more heavily toward
the under as we move along. Avoid the under in Game 1 of a series,
however, as for some reason this game tends to be free-flowing, while Game 2
tends to tighten up.
It Ain't Over 'til It's Over
One last thing to keep in mind as you look for betting opportunities these
NHL Playoffs: don't be too quick to count a team out. Most folks thought the
Canadiens were finished after they went down 3-1 in their series versus
Washington, but they rallied around each other, rode spectacular goaltending
and won three consecutive games to win the series and eliminate the
Capitals. These guys put their bodies through an incredible physical grind
all season long for the chance to play for a Stanley Cup, so you can be sure
they are not going to go down without a fight. Out of all the tips I can
give you, one of the best is: look for good spots to play
on an underdog in a situation where they are facing elimination--you can
definitely expect them to give their absolute best effort.
