Betting on Golf
If Value is What You're Looking For
While some of you reading this are already aware, it will come as a surprise
to others to know that you can, in fact, bet on your favorite golfer to win
a tournament. In fact, not only can you bet on golf, the potential payouts
can be huge. Even the Tiger Woods' and Phil Mickelsons of the world
typically offer anywhere from 3-1 to 6-1 odds during any given tournament.
While this is decent enough, the real value lies in betting some underdogs.
Anyone who follows golf on a regular basis understands just how difficult it
is for a player to win an event on the PGA Tour. In a field of 100 players,
there are typically anywhere from 10-30 players who legitimately have a shot
at winning, and the potential payouts are huge. For example, as it stands
right now at one particular sport book, there are only five golfers who
would pay LESS than 20-1 to win the 2010 US Open tournament. Compare this
with my statement regarding 10-30 players having a shot at winning any given
tournament, and you have some outstanding value and money making potential.
Definitely remember to shop around for the best odds--different sport books
offer different odds and it could mean a difference of hundreds of dollars.

History Repeats Itself
So, what are our tips? Well, if you're a regular follower of the PGA
Tour, you are already well aware of the fact that certain players tend to
play exceptionally well at certain golf courses, and of course certain
players also tend to play exceptionally bad at certain courses. This
knowledge is crucial in identifying potential money making opportunities. If
you don't regularly follow the PGA Tour, all the information you need can be
found online: where the tournament is being held, past champions and leaderboards, etc. Use this information. If a player has placed in the Top 5
of a particular tournament more than once in the past few years, chances are
he likes playing there, his style of golf game blends well with the course
and he has a pretty good shot at repeating his past success.
When I bet on golf, I use the knowledge outlined above to identify 3-5
players who have had past success at the course and/or are currently playing
well on the PGA Tour. I prefer to only only bet on players who are listed at
20-1 odds or higher to maximize my potential winnings, and I don't bet very
much money on them. A golf tournament is a taxing four day event where the
slightest mental slip can be the difference between winning and missing the
cut. Keep this in mind when placing your bets--a mere $10 wager could return
you $300 if your 30-1 player wins the tournament. The risk to reward factor
is off the charts, and with baseball being the only other summer gambling
option, it's a fun change of pace to bet on golf.
